Conflict with journalist Julianne Malveaux

On April 18, 2017, Solar Industry magazine wrote that SEIA publicly apologized after a journalist, Julianne Malveaux, who wrote an op-ed about the association, complained about being harassed with "intimidation" tactics by SEIA. Malveaux said, "Earlier this year, I wrote a piece in a publication that focuses on issues in the African American community, about the rooftop solar business, and expressed concerns that industry bad actors were misleading consumers." She then received a phone call from SEIA suggesting she talk with their general counsel. "I believe that [their] suggestion that I speak with SEIA's general counsel, Tom Kimbis, is an attempt to assert that my comment about 'targeting communities of color' could be libelous," she said. SEIA said that the controversy was a misunderstanding. SEIA's general counsel also oversees the association's consumer protection efforts.
